Overview

The Primitive Methodists came to Burnie in 1868, they were an extension of the Penguin circuit. The first service was held in the house of Mr. Thomas Atkinson at South Burnie, this building was formerly the Emu Inn.

The VDL Co. gifted a block of land on the corner of Ladbrooke and Mount Streets to the Primitive Methodist to build a church. Timber was donated by Mr. R. Dudfield and Mr. William Boatwright built the little church at a cost of £50. It opened in 1869.

In 1883 the United Free Methodists opened a church in Mount Street between Cattley and Wilmot Street. The Wesleyan Methodists arrived in 1890, building a small brick church in Cattley Street.

Towards 1900 these three denominations agreed to amalgamate, they formed the United Methodist Church.
