Gawler Primitive Methodist Church

A round 1901 the Primitive Methodist Church at Gravel Hill, Ulverstone was moved to Gawler Junction and was administered from Penguin.

On the 1st January 1902 five Methodist denominations: Primitive, Wesleyan, United Free, Bible Christian Church and the Methodist New Connexion formed a union, they became the Methodist Church of Australia. The Gawler church came under this union.

In 1924 Mr. Joseph Stratton gave a history of the church to the Advocate newspaper, he recalled past ministers, how the original Gravel Hill church was built and some of the congregation. Rev. M.E J. Stansall in his book Tasmanian Methodist 1820-1975 relates:

The compiler remembers that, in the period 1910 to 1920, the church and the Sunday-school were quite vigorous. The congregation came by horse-drawn vehicles from all parts of the extensive Gawler district. Also strong support was given by people in the neighbourhood.

Due to its proximity to Ulverstone and the change of conditions it became redundant. The church was moved to Turners Beach and used as a Sunday-school in 1972.
