Deloraine Uniting Church

In early December 1856, an advertisement in the Launceston Examiner announced the imminent opening of the Deloraine Wesleyan Chapel, scheduled for Sunday, December 7th. On this notable day, Rev. J.A. Manton, the governor of Horton College in Ross, was slated to deliver sermons at both the morning and evening services, specifically at eleven o'clock and six o'clock.

By October 1900, architectural plans had been drafted for a new church and vestry, and tenders were solicited for their construction. However, historical records indicate that while the vestry was indeed built, the envisioned new church was not.

Fast forward to approximately 1964, discussions emerged once more concerning the modernization of the church hall and its ancillary services. These discussions culminated on November 27, 1965, when the foundation stone for a new church and Sunday school was ceremoniously laid. This new establishment was subsequently opened and dedicated on May 7, 1966.

Significantly, on June 22, 1977, the Uniting Church of Australia (UCA) was formed through the amalgamation of the Congregational, Methodist, and Presbyterian Churches of Australia. This historical union included the Deloraine Wesleyan Chapel, which was henceforth known as St Andrew's Uniting Church.

The first Methodist Church in Deloraine was built in 1857 before the Methodists and Presbyterians joined on the Methodist site 40 years ago and established the Uniting Church.

Congregation chair John Phelps said the congregation had diminished in size in recent years and members had decided to close.

An afternoon tea will follow the 2pm service.

With sadness, the parishioners of St. Andrew's Church bid farewell to their little church on Sunday, May 7, 2017, with a final service.
