Chalmers Free Presbyterian Church

In the architectural history, the origins of a notable edifice constructed during the years 1859-1860 are traced to the Presbyterian congregation, under the skilled design of Longford-born architect William Henry Clayton. Clayton's formative years were enriched by training in England, where he honed his craft alongside the esteemed civil engineer associated with railways, Robert Stephenson. Notably, Clayton's name finds a place of honor on the fountain in Princes Square, a tangible testament to his pivotal role in the design of Launceston's Water Scheme in 1857.

The trajectory of Clayton's career led him to New Zealand in 1863, where he embarked on a new chapter marked by private practice and, subsequently, his appointment as the inaugural Colonial Architect. In this distinguished capacity, Clayton left an indelible mark on the architectural landscape, overseeing the construction of numerous significant structures that shaped the burgeoning urban centers of New Zealand. However, Clayton's illustrious career was tragically cut short at the premature age of 53, with his passing in 1877 leaving behind a legacy of architectural excellence and innovation.
