Hagley's first Church of England of St Mary's

On Friday the 16th January 1847 the foundation stone was laid for the new Church at Hagley, at the time Hagley came under the Westbury parish. Richard Dry (later to become Sir Richard Dry) and Mrs. Lyttleton partially endowed the funds for the small brick church and land.

E .G. Scott in his book Hagley wrote that the first place of worship was built on part of the Lyttleton Estate of 500 acres granted to Captain William Lyttleton; his land he called Hagley. The Cornwall Chronicle newspaper states 10 acres on which to build a church was the gift of Rev. R.R. Davies on account of the Lyttleton Estate.

The new Church of England building was opened on the 9th June 1848 by the Bishop of Tasmania Rt. Rev. Bishop Nixon accompanied by several clergymen. For many years this was the only church in the area and was used by all Protestant religions. The location for this church was believed to be where the Presbyterian church was later built.

This building was replaced by the new St Mary's church.
