Holy Redeemer

From 1850 to 1869, Father Hogan attended to the pastoral needs of the Roman Catholics in the Deloraine area. He facilitated the construction of a small timber church, which also served as a schoolhouse, at a cost of £400.

Recognizing the need for spiritual leadership in the region, Bishop Robert Willson arranged for Father Tom Butler from Launceston to visit Deloraine. After Father Hogan's appointment, Bishop Willson petitioned the government for land in the township. In September 1851, the Lieutenant Governor withdrew the land from sale. In January 1852, Bishop Willson applied for ten acres of glebe land but was informed that the Catholic Church could not receive glebe land. Nonetheless, three acres were reserved for parish buildings.

The foundation stone for a new Gothic-style bluestone church was laid on November 10, 1884, by His Lordship Bishop Daniel Murphy, in front of a large assembly. Subscriptions had raised over £400 towards the building fund. It was reported that the church would be constructed in the style of the Catholic church at Westbury, on the site of the old timber church.

On Thursday, November 13, 1886, the church was dedicated to the Holy Redeemer by Bishop Daniel Murphy of Hobart. A high Mass was held, attended by notable Roman Catholic dignitaries and locals. Credit for the design was given to architect Henry Hunter of Hobart, and the construction was carried out by builder Mr. P. Davern. The building comprised a porch, nave, and transept, though the chancel and sacristy were not included in the initial contract.

As of June 2024 this church was still in use.
