Overview

B ishop Willson approached the government in 1855 asking for four acres of land on which to build a church. Again in 1864 Willson requested land, this time six acres to build a church, school, burial ground 'and for other religious purposes', Wilson was permitted to select four acres of the six he requested, this was a section facing Drew Street.

The land was situated east of Wright Street and north on Drew Street . Father Noone set to work right away and the Star of the Sea Church was completed, and opened on the 8th September 1870 by the Vicar General and Father William Dunne. A collection at the service raised £52.

At the end of 1898 the building was ferried across the Mersey River using a punt, it was relocated on Don Hill overlooking the township. Mr. Christopher Harrison a local carrier was given the task of transporting the building up the steep bank of the river.
