St Matthew's Presbyterian Church

This wooden church was built on land granted to Mr. J. Maclanachan of Ballochmyle, Tunbridge. Mr Maclanachan bequeathed the sum of £1,000 to the Presbyterian church, of this. £500 was for the support of a minister for the Tunbridge district and to build a church. In 1844 a committee was appointed to oversee the erection of the church.

In November 1885 tenders were called for the erection of the Tunbridge church. The church was built by Mr. James Gray of Campbell Town according to the plans prepared by architect Mr. H. Conway of Launceston.

Made of wood resting on stone, the church was estimated to hold 100 persons. It was opened on the 11th April 1886, with the Rev. John Lyell taking the service.

The building contained a pulpit which was over 100 years old and used by the Cleveland Presbyterian Church and subsequently in the old Red Chapel near Tunbridge.

This building was moved to Taranna on the Tasman Peninsula.
