Overview

Originally constructed as the Congregational Independent Chapel, this building was acquired by the Church of Scotland in 1857, subsequently becoming known as the Knox Free Church. In 1858, the congregation celebrated the church's first anniversary with a special commemorative service. The morning sermon was delivered by the Rev. W. Nicholson, while the evening sermon was preached by the Rev. J. Downes. Collections were taken during both services to help alleviate the debt incurred from the purchase of the building.

By 1861, The Mercury reported that the Primitive Methodist congregation had assumed ownership of the Knox Free Church on Collins Street for their place of worship.
