The Church of the Good Shepherd

The Church of the Good Shepherd has an interesting history. In 1868 Archdeacon Thomas Reibey (of Entally House) set out plans to build a small attractive stone church in the village of Hadspen. The following is a quote from http://www.ourtasmania.com.au/launceston/hadspen.html

It took a century to build the town's bluestone Church of the Good Shepherd. Thomas Reibey, who was the church rector, had footed the bill for its construction, but as the walls were being erected, Reibey became involved in a scandal involving a local woman. Bishop Francis Nixon refused to accept any more of his 'dirty money', and as there were no other funds available, the church remained unfinished until 1961. The different colour of the stones used in the upper sections of the walls identifies when each parts of the walls were built.

Another church served the community during this period, it was called St Stephen's. This building was sold to the Methodists.

In 1959 work commenced on the bluestone church 'Reibey's Church' as it was known. It was finished in 1961 and dedicated as The Church of the Good Shepherd, most of the furnishings and stained glass windows came from Entally House Chapel, the windows from St Stephen's were reused. This church was consecrated in February 1973.

The last service was held on Sunday 30th January 2018.
