Church of Holy Nativity

A new chapel was begun in 1844 at Bishopsbourne in the Parish of Little Hampton. It was first called Christ Church because of its connection with the Bishop's residence Christ College nearby.

Mr. William Guillyer Walker was the principle landowner within Bishopsbourne, his property 'Vron' consisted of 2,896 acres. Mr Webb leased part of Walker's land and built the church as well as other houses in Bishopsbourne.

The building was funded by subscriptions with a large contribution from Bishop Nixon and the Launceston Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge.

This neat little church was opened for Divine Service on 25th April 1845 by Bishop Nixon assisted by others members of the clergy. At the dedication it was called the Holy Nativity. Lieutenant Skardon donated the church bell (dating from 1836) and pulpit.

This church is listed on the 1999 Tasmanian Heritage Council and described as:

Victoria Free Gothic, with corrugated Iron roof and stucco walls.

In 1995 the church celebrated 150 years with a service conducted by Right Rev. Phillip Newell the Bishop of Tasmania. A western red cedar tree was planted by Bishop Newell in the grounds.
