All Saints'

Established on this site in 1855 with a temporary wooden chapel, All Saints Anglican Church was conceived to serve the growing needs of Hobart's Anglican community. In 1858, the foundation stone for the present church was laid by Governor Young, with Henry Hunter’s design selected as both economical and aesthetically distinguished. His work here is considered one of his finest contributions to the Church of England.

The church opened in 1859 and was consecrated in November 1861. It originally comprised the nave, chancel, and sanctuary, with all seating offered freely. Built in the Victorian Academic Gothic style, the structure features brown and white sandstone, a 65-foot spire, lancet windows, and an open-timber roof of steep pitch. Interior elements reflect Early English Gothic simplicity, while later additions enriched the site: a side aisle and chapel (1862), Sunday School hall (1877), and vestry (1895, in Arts and Crafts style).

The church contains 18 stained glass windows by notable firms including Ferguson & Urie (Melbourne) and Percy Bacon Brothers (London), and intricate woodcarving by Tasmanian artist Ellen Nora Payne.

All Saints continues to worship in the Anglo-Catholic (High Church) tradition, with services characterised by choral music, incense, ritual, and rich symbolism.

A listed site on the Tasmanian Heritage Register, All Saints stands as a distinguished example of 19th-century ecclesiastical architecture, embodying both the spiritual and cultural aspirations of its era.
