Overview
The first stone for St George's church was laid in October 1836, it was consecrated in May 1838 by Bishop Broughton, Bishop of Australia. Designed in the Neo-Classical style by the architect John Lee Archer.
The nave with its Egyptian style windows and flat ceiling of plaster was built by John Wright and cost £2,479 half came from subscription and the other half from the Crown.
The portico and tower is reputed to have been designed by James Blackburn, who worked in John Lee Archer's office; it is of Grecian design. The bell was made locally by Swain of Hobart.
This church 'The Light on the Hill' has a commanding position on Kermode's Hill at Battery Point over looking Hobart and Derwent River. It is still in use today.
