Overview

In June 1885 the Tasmanian Catholic Standard reported that due to efforts of Father Martial Mary a church was opened at Lottah.

In 1910 a piece of land had been purchased on which to erect a Catholic Church. The priority was to build stables for the priest to house his horse and buggy.

The Mercury newspaper reported the following information:

Lottah once possessed a Roman Catholic Church, but it was destroyed in a fire which burnt the principal buildings in the township, and until recently the Roman Catholic community being a small one, no steps have been taken to replace the old-time structure, which, by the way, had once been a billiardroom.
For some years past the Roman Catholic and Anglican Church services have been held in the State-school, the Methodist body being the only one owning a church building in Lottah. Father Travers is nothing if not energetic, and has succeeded in rousing the dormant activities of his flock.

In 1923 the building was cut in two and transported by a team of bullocks to Pygenana, where it became St Augustine's Catholic Church. The building was in in a state of disrepair when we visited c2003.
