Overview
A fair was held to raise money for the Moonah Mission Hall building fund. In December 1908, the hall was officially opened by the Hon. Tetley Grant, M.L.C. Among the dignitaries present were Mr F. B. Rattle, M.H.A., Mr J. H. Edwards, Warden of New Town, and the Reverends S. H. Hughes of St John’s, New Town, and G. Rowe.
During the ceremony, Hon. Tetley Grant revealed details of the hall’s construction. He explained that a contract had been let about fifteen months earlier, that the funds had been borrowed on the responsibility of the churchwardens and other gentlemen, and that a total of £400 had been spent.
Geoffrey Stephen's in his book, The Anglican Church in Tasmania, wrote:
St. Mary's, Moonah. In 1908 Moonah Mission Hall near the Derwent Park railway station was dedicated. In 1924 the church, on its present site, was built and deciated. Built of Brick, the cost £5,000. It was consecrated in June 1929. In 1975 a narthex, hall and porch costing £50,000 weere added.
A photograph published in the Tasmanian Mail newspaper in 1918 shows a beautifully carved Tasmanian blackwood altar, crafted by Mr. R. D. Powers for the Anglican Chapel of Ease, Moonah.
