Howrah Wesleyan Methodist Church

In 1957 a ladies guild was formed to work towards setting up a church in the Howrah area. The first meeting was chaired by Rev. Ivor Maggs on the 3rd December 1958, it was decided that a United church would be built.

Prior to the building of the church, special services were held at the residence of Mr. & Mrs. I. Chapman situated in Rokeby Road.

Two blocks of land were purchased by the Wesley Church of Hobart for three thousand, seven hundred and fifty four pounds on the corner of Tranmere and Howrah Roads in 1959. The building was designed by Messrs. I.G. & L.G. Anderson as a multi purpose church and hall. The building was an A frame construction of steel and timber.

The proposed plan was a venture between the Congregational and Presbyterian churches, but this did not transpire and it became a sole Methodist project. Rev. A.N. Kemp conducted the opening and dedication service on the 5th June 1960.

Services were conducted by lay preachers of other denominations. A kindergarten by the Education Department, Guide and Brownie groups made use of the building. The Howrah church came under the United cause and a Joint Advisory Council (the Trust) was formed. In 1971 'The Trust' advised that Howrah was to join the Bellerive parish.
