Hobart Wesleyan Methodist Church

The Wesleyan Mission in Hobart Town was established when Missionary Benjamin Carvosso arrived in April 1820. He held the first service on the 28th of April 1820 at the steps of the Court House.

Later that year, on the 29th of October 1820, the first Wesleyan Methodist meeting took place in a carpenter's shop on Argyle Street, rented from Mr. Charles Donn. The shop was situated on land bounded on the south-east by the Hobart Town Rivulet and on the north-east by Argyle Street. This modest venue served the growing congregation, but it soon became apparent that a larger, more permanent place of worship was needed.

In June 1822, an advertisement in the Hobart Town Gazette and the Van Diemen's Land Advertiser announced that Divine Services would be performed by the Rev. N. Turner at 3 o'clock and by Rev. W. White at 6 o'clock, signaling the mission's steady growth.

A public appeal was launched to raise funds for the construction of a purpose-built chapel. Although the process was slow, construction finally began in January 1823. By November of that year, the original carpenter's shop was replaced by the newly constructed Melville Street Chapel, located on the same land. Today, a multi-storey car park occupies the site where the first Argyle Street chapel once stood.
