Overview

In March of 1953, the Catholic Women's Committee of George Town orchestrated a charitable ball with the noble aim of raising funds for the construction of a Catholic church. In a gesture of remarkable generosity, the architect, Mr. Edmond Dorney, graciously waived his fee, amounting to £90, thus contributing significantly to the cause.

Dean W. Ryan was responsible for the church’s construction, a responsibility he fulfilled with great diligence. The culmination of these efforts was the official inauguration of the church in May 1953, a ceremony of profound significance, presided over by Archbishop Tweedy. This occasion not only marked a pivotal moment in the religious life of George Town but also in Tasmania's architectural history, as this was the first prefabricated church to be erected in Tasmania. The total cost of the project amounted to £3,076.

The altar was meticulously crafted in its entirety by the devoted members of the congregation.

This structure was subsequently succeeded by the present brick edifice, which now stands in its place.
