St Augustine's

On the 7th November 1867, a significant chapter in the history of St Augustine's Church unfolded as its doors were opened for Divine Service. The auspicious occasion was marked by the presence of the Most Reverend Bishop of Hobart Town, who delivered a solemn High Mass, captivating the congregation with his eloquence and reverence.

In adherence to the tradition of the time, admission to the inaugural service was set at 2s. 6d. per person. This modest fee served a dual purpose, offering attendees the opportunity to contribute towards the liquidation of the debt incurred during the construction of the church, while also symbolizing their commitment to the spiritual foundation it represented.

Adding to the solemnity of the occasion, the esteemed Church of Apostles choir lent their voices to enhance the devotional atmosphere, enriching the experience for all in attendance. Their harmonious melodies resonated within the sacred space, elevating the worship to a higher plane of spiritual transcendence.
