St Saviour's

The foundation of St. Saviour's Church on the 22nd September 1897 stands as a momentous occasion, witnessed by a congregation of visitors and residents alike, gathered to witness the solemn laying of the cornerstone by Canon Beresford. Among the benefactors whose generosity shaped the church's inception, Mr. F.J. Bowman stands prominently, his contributions instrumental in its realization.

Under the architectural guidance of Mr. H.H. Freeman and the skilled craftsmanship of contractor Mr. Reilly, assisted by dedicated local residents, the vision of St. Saviour's took shape. By July 1898, the church had largely materialized, with a mere £30 debt remaining, testament to the community's steadfast commitment to its completion. The generous gift of an altar from the churchwardens of All Saints, Hobart, further embellished the sanctity of the space, while hopes soared for the donation of additional seating by local residents.

The culmination of these efforts reached fruition in February 1898, with the auspicious opening of the church officiated by Bishop Stone Wigg of New Guinea. The harmonious strains of music, graciously provided by Miss Woodberry and Mrs. Anderson, adorned the inaugural ceremony, adding to its solemnity and grace.

However, the passage of time ushered in unforeseen transitions for St. Saviour's. In 2019, the church found itself listed for sale, marking the beginning of a new chapter in its storied existence. The following year, in 2020, the decision was made to deconsecrate the sacred space, a somber yet necessary step in its transition. As the curtains draw to a close on this chapter, the torch is poised to pass to the Meander Progress Association, heralding a future where the legacy of St. Saviour's Church continues to resonate within the hearts and minds of the community it once served.
