Overview

Built in 1908 beside the Derwent Park railway station, the Moonah Mission Hall provided a place for Divine Services until a later structure took its place

In May 1924, the foundation stone of St Mary’s Church at Moonah was laid by Mr. R. W. Shoobridge. On this occasion, he was presented with an inscribed trowel by Archdeacon Richard and a blackwood mallet by Bishop Dr. Robert S. Hay.

The red brick building, constructed in 1929 at a cost of £5,000, was reported to have followed the architectural plan of St Stephen’s Church at Wynyard. Its opening in June of that year drew a large congregation, with Bishop Dr. Robert S. Hay presiding over the inaugural service.

In 1975, a Narthex porch was added to the structure at a cost of $50,000.

This church was sold in June 2015, it is now St Mary's Coptic Orthodox Church.
