Overview
The foundation stone for the new St Mary's Church of England was laid on the 12th February 1862 by his Excellency Col. Gore Browne with Archdeacon Davies conducting the service.
Tenders were called in September 1861 and work commenced in February the following year. Designed by Mr. Bastow of Macquarie Street, Hobart Town the estimated cost was £500.
In July 1864 it was reported that the partly built St Mary's church had been blown down by a storm the previous year. In July 1863 Mr. Hayes moved before House of Assembly that an address be presented to his Excellency the Governor a sum £100 in aid of the re-erection of the church.
The Mercury newspaper in October 1873 reported the following:
ST MARY'S CHURCH BRIDGEWATER - After a lapse exceeding eleven years from laying the foundation stone by our late Governor Gore Brown, this ecclesiastical looking little church was opened for divine service, and consecrated by the Lord Bishop of Tasmania on St Luke's Day October 18th.
Extensive repairs have been undertaken over the years.
The Mercury newspaper in January 2008 reported the deterioration of the church and shows the graffiti inside by vandals.
