St Peter's

The foundation stone for the first St Peters church was laid on the 8th December 1846 by Archdeacon Marriott. It was dedicated on the 18th April 1847.

Situated on the summit of a hill, the church has an extensive and commanding view of the countryside. On the 6th January 1851 the church was filled to capacity to celebrate its consecration by Bishop Nixon.

A report stated that it looked pretty enough but that it was cheaply and flimsily constructed. The building was cold, damp and the inside dirty.

Rev. Henry Plow Kane, the first headmaster of Launceston Church Grammar School was appointed Missionary Chaplain to Paterson's Plains. It was he who did the painting of the first church (see below).

The recurring theme at meetings was the condition of the church and grounds. On the 14th February 1867 Captain Wettenhall moved a resolution that a new church be built as soon as practicable. Subscription lists were opened to collect funds for the new church.

Built of brick and bluestone with concrete foundations the new Church was consecrated by the Bishop of Tasmania Right Rev. C.F. Bromby on the 13th May 1869. The building measured 40 feet by 30 feet and built in the early English Gothic style.

In 2022 this building was listed for sale and in April 2023, the Examiner newspaper reported that it had been sold and was going to be developed into a funeral parlour with uses for community meetings, crematoria and cemetery .
