St James Chapel

The St James Chapel, built in 1850 by Robert Thirkell, stands as a testament to the devotion and faith of the community. The brick building may appear weathered on the outside, but it was kept in excellent condition inside. In its early days, it served as both a place of worship on Sundays and a schoolroom during the week.

In 1953, the walls of the chapel were painted blue, giving it a warm and inviting feel. The interior was equipped with three pews on either side, four forms at the back, and a pulpit and organ on the left side of the alter. A small vestry was located at the back of the building, providing a space for the minister to prepare.

The churchyard surrounding the chapel holds the graves of several families and four men who were tragically murdered by bushrangers. Robert Thirkell himself was also laid to rest in this hallowed ground, passing away at the age of 85 in November of 1876.

To enhance the worship experience, a beautiful and intricately inlaid harmonium was installed by Mr. J. Bayles of Darlington Park. The instrument was made of brass and satinwood and was operated by foot, making it possible to accompany hymns and songs. The St James Chapel remains a cherished part of the community, a symbol of its rich history and unwavering faith.

The Chapel and Darlington Estate are listed on the Tasmanian Heritage Register.
