St George's Chapel-of-Ease

Built in the 1860s by Molesworth Jeffrey it was used both as a school and chapel. The building was 25 feet in length and had a kitchen and sleeping room for the teacher.

The last service in St George's was conducted by Canon de Coetlogen on the 28th April 1912.

Serving the community for over 50 years the church fell into disrepair. The following report is from the Advocate newspaper, January 1931:

OLD CHURCH DESTROYED - An old dilapidated church at Lachlan, near New Norfolk, on a portion of Mr. T. Gaul's property, was destroyed by fire early this morning.

The church, which was originally built by the late Mr. Molesworth Jeffrey for the people of the Lachlan district, was known as St George's Church of England, and was regarded in the early days as one of the finest appointed churches for its size in Tasmania. Over 20 years ago, when the late Archdeacon Richard was rector of the New Norfolk parish, the new church was erected and St George's was closed. For some time people had lived in the old building until recently, when it had become unfit for habitation. The building was probably with £60. The cause of the fire is unknown.

St George's was destroyed by fire in the early hours of 31st December 1930.
