Sidmouth Union Church

The former Sidmouth United/Union church was originally located at the intersection of the Batman Highway and Spring Hill Road. Prior to the upgrade of the intersection, the church was dismantled and relocated to private property in 1995, where it was painstakingly rebuilt by its new owner. This property has since changed hands.

In April 1907 the Daily Telegraph reported the following:

SIDMOUTH - Service was held in the new church and Sunday-school on Sunday for the first time. In the morning the Rev. Martin of Beaconsfield, preached, and in the afternoon the Salvation Army held a service which was led by Mr. W. Clare. The building was not large enough to hold the congregation, about fifty having to stand outside. In the evening Mr. Staples, of Beaconsfield held a service. A bazaar and concert is to be held on Wednesday next in aid of the new building.

The first wedding in the church was solemised on 21st April 1909 between Miss Myrtle Clark, second daughter of the late Mr. John Redmond Clark of Wilby to Mr. Charles Berry of Exeter, son of Mr. Henry William Berry.

Rev. Roach the Anglican minister of Beaconsfield performed the service.

The family went on to have 13 children, 5 sons and 8 daughters.

Mr. & Mrs. Berry are both buried in the Auld Kirk Cemetery at Sidmouth.
