St Alban's Church (old)

The suburb Claremont is one of Hobart's northern outer areas.

St. Alban's Church, in its original form, holds historical heritage significance as it exemplifies the essential features of a weatherboard Federation Carpenter Gothic church structure. Additionally, the church's link to architect Alan Walker further enhances its heritage value. Carpenter Gothic is a style of North American architecture that applies Gothic Revival details and massing to wooden structures built by house-carpenters.

Church News in October 1894 noted that there was a need for a church at Claremont, but it was not until 1913 the foundation stone was laid.

On Saturday 5th July 1913 the foundation stone was laid by His Excellency the Governor William Ellison-Macartney. The church was to be known as St Alban's and will have a nave, chancel and tower. The new church was expected to be a Christian centre for a Mother's Union and a club for boys and girls.

St Alban's Church of England was opened on Saturday 18th April 1914 . The building included a belfry and vestry. The architects were Messrs. Alan Walker and Johnston, the builders were Messrs. Valentine and Creese. The contract price was £391, this was completed without any extras. Mr. Flexmore donated the land situated on the Main Road

In 1979 this building was replaced with a new brick building located at 56 Main Road. It is now a private residence.
