St Bernard and St Malachy

Father Mary Martial visited Branxholm in 1882, he celebrated Mass in a new store belonging to Mr. A.J. Joyce. At a meeting held during his visit fund raising was set up to erect a church.

The foundation stone was laid and blessed on the 17th February 1884 by Archbishop Murphy at 5 pm in the evening. In Margaret E. Fairburn & Father John T. McKay book 'The Flickering Flame : Catholicism in the North-East Tasmania 1877-2011' they wrote that it appeared the church had been completed in 1885, but not officially dedicated until 27th February 1887 by the Bishop of Tasmania. The timber church was dedicated to St. Bernard and St. Malachy.

Between 1887 and 1948 original church records appeared to have been lost. Mr. Nic van den Bosch described the church as:

... being a tall building on the side of a hill and one had to climb five or six steps to enter the church. He said he distinctly remembers it was a cold building and that it would creak in the wind.

When mining ceased in the area the population began to decline and the Catholic congregation moved out of the district. Sadly the Catholic church fell into disrepair. In 1983 the church was demolished and Mass was then celebrated in the Anglican Church.
