Overview

The foundation stone for St Mark's was laid on the 11th March 1856 by the Lord Bishop of Tasmania Francis Russell Nixon. The church for various reasons took longer to construct than planned.

Architect William Henry Clayton advertised for tenders to apply before 15th March for lead glazing of the new church at Deloraine.

In March 1859 the church was dedicated and one year later it was consecrated. The building cost £2,100, of this parishioners raised about £1,300. Because the cost exceeded the estimate, the building committee sort aid from abroad to pay off the remaining £800. Funds arrived from the Patriotic, Wellington, Nightingale and other charitable organisations.

The chancel was removed in 1878 and a northern transept, and a new chancel and sanctuary were added and consecrated in October 1878. The handmade bricks for the church were made on Bonney’s farm and the copper spire was re-covered in 1928. The church was renovated inside and out in 1953 at a cost of £1,500.

The organ which is still in use today was formerly dedicated by Archdeacon Reibey on 21st October 1860.

This church sits majestically on the hill overlooking Deloraine and is still in use today.
