St Andrew's

Early Anglican services at Epping Forest were held in the Presbyterian Church.

The Daily Telegraph newspaper dated 3rd December 1924 reported the following:

NEW CHURCH AT EPPING

A new church is being erected at Epping for the Church of England. The whole cost is being borne by Captain Forster, whose many acts of benevolence are extensively known. The building will be wholly of concrete, and when completed will be an ornament at the corner of Macquarie street on the Main road. Mr. Coombes is the contractor, and the residents greatly appreciate the generous act of Captain Forster.

The article states Captain Forster, but the plaque on the church has J. D. Foster.

This roughcast concrete church was consecrated by the Right Rev. Dr. Hay, Bishop of Tasmania on the Sunday 22nd February 1925 at 3 p.m. The rector of the parish was congratulated on the beautiful little church, the workmen for their work, and the donor (Mr. John D. Foster) for his most generous gift.

St Andrew's is listed on the Tasmanian Heritage Register as follows:

*It is a brick rendered Inter-War Gothic church with sandstone foundations. It has a steeply pitched gabled

roof with simply styled bargeboards to the gable-ends, and exposed rafters.*

*It is of historic heritage significance because of its ability to demonstrate the principal characteristics of a brick

Inter-War Gothic church.*

On our visit in March 2021 the land and trees around it have been cleared and the church is looking well cared for.
