St Martin's

The first mention of a Catholic Church in the Ringarooma area appeared in the Launceston Examiner on the 8th July 1881, with a report that the Roman Catholic's had commenced the building of a chapel and all denominations had subscribed. It was expected that Rev. Mr. Mare from George's Bay would make the long journey to officiate.

The land on which the church was built was a gift from Mr. Patrick O'Doherty. This small wooden "neat and comfortable" chapel was dedicated to St Martin of Tours.

The church was officially dedicated on the 17th February 1884 by the Bishop of Tasmanian Right Rev. Daniel Murphy.

In 1883 Mr. Comerford opened a private school in the church, but after a month he departed. Despite opposition in 1885 the school was established and in August 1886 the following rhyming letter was penned by Mr. O'Doherty to Mr. John Rubenach:

St Martin's school I'm glad to tell

Tho' much opposed is doing well.

Our teacher will at any time

Be glad to meet a friend of mine

Sadly after school on the 9th October 1890 it was believed embers from the fireplace ignited the floor, fanned by strong winds the building caught fire. The Launceston Examiner newspaper reported that unfortunately the building was not insured.

The State School was used for services until 1899. A new church was built in 1904.
